The top priority of consumer protection in Bavaria is safe and healthy food. The Bavarian model of co-operative consumer protection ensures that the quality of the food is checked at all stages from the farm to the retail outlet.

State controls alone are of course not sufficient for this. That is why the state has concluded a "Pact for Safe Food" with the food industry and consumer groups in Bavaria. The pact includes joint measures to ensure that the food is safe, a comprehensive exchange of information between all the parties involved, and scientifically based information for the consumer.

Prevention and Precautions

Preventive health care is taken very seriously in Bavaria, and a wide range of preventive check-ups are available, for example against diseases of the heart or circulation. A consciously healthy way of life can contribute greatly to avoiding illness and disease.

The Bavarian health initiative "Gesund.Leben.Bayern" ("Healthy.Life.Bavaria") aims to explain to people of all age groups, especially to children and young people, how they can do more for their health. Last year the state made 6.7 million Euros available to the health initiative to organise workshops and campaigns in schools and kindergartens, for example. Another focal point is health protection at work.

Here prevention does not only mean protecting the workers from accidents at work. A healthy working environment is equally important, one that for instance reduces the health risks of noisy and stressful work. That is why Bavaria supports and advises firms setting up a holistic health management programme in the workplace.
